As a novice writer who one day hopes to make his living writing, I'm constantly learning. One thing I've learned from my latest articles is that sometimes I may be a little too funny and/or too circular in my writing.
My last article Is America a Classless Society? didn't have the reaction that I'd planned. It was well received and all, but people missed the point I was mainly interested in discussing. I did have repeated to me many times that people do feel America has separate and unequal classes. A fact I knew a long time ago. I will also admit I thought that the idea of a class system would have sparked a little bit more outrage, instead it seemed people were... I don't know... resigned to that system. I find that sad.
Now to be clear the direction the comments took in my articles is my responsibility and I accept it fully. But, this article is not about my journey and pratfalls regarding writing, or about how America has a class system, or even how sad either may be. What I'd really, really like to discuss is this clip:
Matt Taibbi on HSBC settlement: ‘I think even people on Wall Street were blown away by the result’
“The decision to not prosecute in this instance belies everything that the government has ever done with regard to drug prosecutions everywhere,” Taibbi says. “I mean, when you think about the way they behave toward ordinary people who get caught up in drug cases, where they seize all your property and they use absolutely the maximum sentences they can possibly avail themselves of, and in this case they catch a bank that launders billions of dollars for Colombian and Mexican drug cartels … for years on end, and they can’t find something to charge these people with?”
“If the law doesn’t apply equally to everybody, then you don’t really have a system of law. And so you have a built-in defense for everybody in every drug case forever,” Taibbi says. “I mean, if you get caught with a stem of marijuana, how do you not stand up and say, ‘You’re going to send me to jail for this where a guy who laundered a billion dollars for a bunch of murderers gets nothing?’”
If you prefer to read a little more you may find Matt Taibbi's article of interest.
Outrageous HSBC Settlement Proves the Drug War is a Joke
Anyway I'd really like to hear other Viner's opinion about Matt Taibbi's and Elliot Spitzer's conversation. If you haven't seen this clip, or article, I hope to inform people of this unbelievable situation.
As always,
This article is not about party, so don't bring it here.
